Portraiture & Commissions
As a contemporary figurative realist, I feel my style is probably most suited to portraiture. Working initially from photographs, which I prefer to shoot myself. I then prepare a series of preliminary studies in graphite showing my concept and creative direction in response to the clients brief. The studies are presented and discussed and only when agreed is the commissioned piece commenced, usually in oil on canvas, either as a direct development of a particular study or as a combination of more than one.
I believe this method of working is the least time consuming for the sitter, although occasionally a short life sitting may be necessary. The studies create a close dialogue and involvement with the sitter, so there are no nasty surprises when the finished original is presented.
As fine art pieces in their own right the studies automatically become part of the overall commission.
